a Great book for lovers of Gospel  |

Reading this book is almost as good as listening to Gospel Music, the writer not only knows his subject, but it is also obvious that he has a real love for the music and those who sing it. He traces the history of gospel music concentrating on various soloists such as Mahalia Jackson, Rosetta Tharpe, Clara Ward and groups such as the Dixie Hummingbirds, Soul Stirrers and such like, in fact most of the important gospel singers and groups are mentioned. He also shows how their singing, hollering, moaning and shouting reflected their hard lives and strong faith. But this is not just a history lesson, for he brings the people to life and shows how they had a tremendous influence on modern popular music such as blues, jazz, R and B, soul, rock n roll and singers such as Elvis, Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin and many others. A great book worth reading for those who love gospel music and for those who want to understand where much of todays music came from.
